Description Austinmer SLSC Established 1909
Austinmer Beach is one of the more popular beaches north of Wollongong. Its popularity dates back to the 1900s when people came by train to stay at several guesthouses. Recognising the growing interest in surf bathing, the proprietor of one of the guesthouses was elected first president of the surf club when it was formed in 1909. The first permanent lifeguard on the south coast was also appointed to Austinmer in 1914.
